All that we have invented,

they are all put there by thought.

Thought has invented these things,

invented the savior,

invented the temples in India and the contents of the temples.

Thought has invented all these things called sacred.

You can’t deny that.

So thought in itself is not sacred.

And when thought invents God, God is not sacred.

Krishnamurti embarked on a world wide speaking tour.

The change was unmistakable.

Everywhere, among all people,

there is a search for something hidden.

For some realization...

which will give greater knowledge,

greater understanding.

And this the people call “truth”.

They think that truth lies hidden in some distant place,

away from life,

away from sorrow.

But truth is life itself.

And with an understanding of life,

there is born an understanding of truth.

While traveling, a sudden hemorrhage...

brought back fears for Nitya’s health.

He was weak, in high fever and racked with coughing.

It was decided that the brothers should again return...

to the dry climate of the Ojai Valley.

Once in California Nitya seemed to improve.

And when Mrs. Besant cabled asking...

for Theosophy’s Jubilee Convention,

he reluctantly agreed.

The bond between the brothers had grown stronger than ever.

There was unquestioning faith that...

Nitya was essential to the work ahead...

and because of this, his life would be spared.

While enroute, a cable arrived saying that Nitya had influenza.

A later wire read, “Flu rather more serious, pray for me.”
On the 13th of November,

as the ship entered the Suez Canal,

a telegram arrived announcing Nitya’s death.

The news broke Krishnamurti completely.

It did more. His entire philosophy of life,

the implicit faith in the future...

and Nitya’s vital part in it all,

appeared to be shattered at that moment.

An old dream...

you will establish another religion,

Nor should any organization be formed...

to lead or coerce people along any particular path.

If an organization be created for this purpose...

it becomes a crutch,

a weakness, a bondage...

and must cripple the individual...

You can form other organizations and expect someone else.

得到彻底、
and unconditionally...
绝对的……
free.
自由。
All religions...
各宗各派……
have always said there is only our path,

our saviour,
我们的救主,
our system,
我们的体系,
our belief,
我们的信仰,
our rituals,
我们的仪式,
and only through those you will find salvation.
只有靠这些,你才能得到拯救。
This has been the constant...
一直以来,各宗各派……

that there is no path to truth.

Truth according to them is a fixed point.

And if it is a fixed point you can have a path...
如果它是固定的一点,你就能找到一条路,
as many paths as you like.
要多少有多少。
But if it is not a fixed point, it’s a living thing, moving,
但如果它不是固定的一点,如果它是鲜活的,变动的,
-movement in the sense, in the world...
——在感官中变动,在与时间无关……
of no time, which is a different matter”
naturally there is no path to it.
当然没有路通向它。
But you see,
不过你瞧,
we don’t want such a dangerous...
我们不想要这样危险的……
outlook.
前景。
We want everything fixed.
我们想确定每件事。
We want every object to be final.
我们想达到每个目标。

that a human being,

should bring about...

a deep, profound change in himself.

is the whole of man.

That is,

you as a human being...
你作为一个人类,
are part of the world.
是这个世界的一部分。
You are the world.
你就是世界。
Not an idea,
这不是一个观念,
not something that intellectually,
不是理性……
has been put together by reason, and says "yes, quite right".
聪明拼凑出的东西,然后说“没错,完全正确。”
But the reality of the truth of it,
这句话蕴含的事实真相是,
that you represent, as a human being, the rest of humanity.
你,作为一个人,代表着全体人类。
You suffer.
你痛苦。
You are anxious.
你焦虑 。
You are uncertain, confused,
你不安、困惑、
miserable,
悲惨、
fearful,
恐惧、
hurt, everything.
受伤、等等。
And every human being has this.
每个人都有这些感受。
So your consciousness...
因此,你的意识,
is the consciousness of mankind.
就是人类的意识。
Now, it is possible...
现在,可以……
for sorrow to end.
结束痛苦了。
If there is the ending of sorrow in one human being...
如果有一个人结束了痛苦,
who is the representative of all humanity,
他是人类的代表,
that ending affects the whole of consciousness of man.

Don’t accept what we are talking about.

Find out. Test it.

That means you have to be free to observe.

To observe without any wish,
抛开任何希求、
any longing, any pressure -you know.

To observe as you observe a lovely flower.

human beings throughout the world don’t see this simple fact,
全世界人都不明白这个简单的事实,
that you cannot possibly have peace on earth...

if you are nationalistically divided.
就不可能在地球上拥有和平。
We want order outside,
我们需要外在的秩序,
in the world.
世界的秩序。
Politically, religiously,
政治上,宗教上,
economically, socially.
经济上,社会上的种种秩序。
In our relationship with each other, we want order.
在人际关系中,我们需要秩序。
We want some peace.
我们需要一些和平。
We want some understanding.
我们需要一些理解。
And...
那么,
if the inward psychological state is orderly,
如果你的内在精神状态是有序的,
not conflicting,
不冲突,
not contradicting,
不矛盾,
if that state in consciousness is quiet,
如果你的意识状态是平静、
steady,
稳定、
clear...
清晰的,
then you can bring about order in the world.
那么你就能为这个世界带来秩序。
Now what we are trying to do...
我们目前正在做的,
is try to bring order...
是试图通过法律、
legislatively,
国家……
nationally,
等等手段……
and so on.
实现秩序。
Order out there...
外部世界的……
in the world.
秩序,
Which has been proved over and over again...
已经一次又一次被证明……
that it totally brings about disorder.
只会带来混乱。
That is why we are saying,

without inward order,
没有内在的秩序,
that is, inward...

order in consciousness,

which is in a mess,

you cannot possibly have order outwardly.

The crisis is not out there.

The crisis is really inward.

And we are unwilling to face that.

education, way of living, and tradition and so on,

that something can be given to somebody else.

Jesus can give you salvation.

Or a guru can save you.

Or your wife can help you.
妻子可以帮你,
That may be an old...
能帮你的也可能是……
worn out tradition to which we are clinging.
我们坚守的古老陈旧的传统。
It may be a wrong approach all together.
但这些方法可能都是错的。
You have understanding...
你已有所领悟,
and I haven’t got it.
而我没有。
And you are conditioned...
你被制约了……
“excuse me,”
You are conditioned...
你被你能教给我的……
in the idea that you can give it to me.
那个观念制约了。
Right?
对吗?
That may not be the fact at all.
那个观念可能根本不是事实。
Psychologically, inwardly, do you depend on somebody?
在内在精神领域,你是否依赖某个人?
You say, please help me to be free of my arrogance.
你说,请帮我从傲慢中解脱。
Or in your relationship...
还是你在跟人相处的过程中,
you see the arrogance in you.
看到了内心的傲慢。
It’s gone.
它就消失了。
In our relationship with each other,
我们彼此相处时,
and I am observing myself.
我在观察自己。
And in that observation I discover that I am arrogant...
观察的过程中,我发现了自己在我们交往相处时……
in our relationship.
流露的傲慢。
So I am not dependent for you to point out to me my arrogance.
因此,我不依赖你来为我指出傲慢。
I am already aware of it.

This is tremendously important sir.

Nobody can give me intensity,
没人能给予我美的强度……
the sense of beauty.

This is simple, this is normal, this actually goes on.

When one is married, or lives with a girl or a boy...
如果我们结婚了,或是跟女友或男友生活在一起,
every incident, every word, every action creates an image.
每件事、每句话、每个行为都在制造意象。

没有吗?
Are we clear on this point?
我们清楚这一点了吗?

I am not trying to persuade you to anything.
我不想说服你什么。
But actually you can see it for yourself.
但实际上你自己可以看清楚它。
A word is registered.
片言只字都会被记在脑海。
If it is pleasant you purr. It is nice.
如果那个词令人愉快,你就咕哝着说,很好。
If it is unpleasant, you'll immediately shrink from it.
如果那个词令人不快,你会立即退缩。
And that creates an image.
那就制造了一个意象。
The pleasure creates an image.
愉快制造意象。
The shrinking, the withdrawal creates an image.
退缩、撤退也制造意象。
So, our actual relationship with each other...

is based on the...
建立在……
on various subtle forms...
各种微妙的……
of pictures, images and conclusions.
形象、意象和结论之上。
So when there is an image like that,

she has and you have,

then in that there is division.
那么,其中就有分歧了。
And then the whole conflict begins.

Where there is division between two images,

there must be conflict, right?

The Jew, the Arab, the Hindu, the Muslim,

it is the same phenomenon.

when you are children, the parents tell you what to do.

That same mentality is cultivated right through life.

in college you are told what to do,
到了学院、大学里也有人教你……
in university.

Right through life...

somebody tells you...
都有人在指指点点,
this is right, this is wrong, this should be done,
这是对的,这是错的,应该做这个,
that should not be done.
不该做那个。
Which means what?

There is no...
这表示没有……
self-investigation.
自我探究。
There is no saying I am really the rest of mankind.
没有人说我确实就是全体人类。
Which you are!
实际上你就是!
Because every human being right through the world,
因为全世界每个人,
goes through a great deal of suffering,
都经历了许多磨难,
a great deal of pain, a great deal of anxiety,
许多痛苦,许多焦虑,
uncertain, confused,
不确定,感到困惑,
insecure,
感到不安,
like you, like the rest of the world.
你就是这样,全世界其他人也是这样。
We don’t accept that.
我们不肯承认。
We think,
我们认为,
my suffering is totally separate from other people’s suffering.

And so...

we have this mentality...
我们会有这个想法,
that...

I must have somebody to tell me what to do.

Right from the Pope, down to the poor Parish Priest.
上至教皇、下至贫穷的教区牧师。
Really one should ask a question, “why human beings...
真的每个人都该问一个问题,“为什么人类……
-though they have extraordinary knowledge-

and yet nobody is willing to change. Why?

Is it that they find security in...

in the habit, in the pattern?

Your pattern, my pattern,

the Christian pattern, the Hindu pattern, the Buddhist.

They are all patterns, a way of thinking.

patterns may be dangerous altogether,

because they divide people.

or talks on the Gita.

Is that right?
有这回事吗?
And there are hundreds and thousands who go and listen to it.
有成千上万人跑去听讲。
What value has it?

What are we all playing at sirs?
先生们,我们都在假装什么?
Apparently one doesn’t see one’s own tragedy.
很明显,我们不明白自己的悲惨。
Right, sir?

Psychologically, why should I accept what somebody else says...
在精神领域,如果认识到我就是全体人类,
when I realize...
我为什么……
that I am the rest of mankind?
还要接受其他人说的那一套?
Mankind is me.
人类就是我。
The “me’ is the history of mankind, the book of mankind.
这个“我”就是人类的历史,就是人类之书。

the positive exists.

love is not desire.

Love is not pleasure.

Love is not a remembrance.
爱不是回忆。
It is as strong as death,
爱如死亡一样强大,
as vital as life.
如生命一样重要。
And you see,
你瞧,
love can only exist when there is no suffering.
只有痛苦消失了,爱才能存在。
Suffering is personal.
痛苦是个人的。
Suffering is also global.
痛苦也是全世界的。
Man has suffered endlessly.
人类经历了无尽的苦难。
And he tries to combine that suffering...
他试图把那个痛苦……
with what he calls love.
和他所谓的爱结合起来。
And so there is always this contradiction,

this duality.

Whereas if you deny all that...

that which is not love,

then the other thing has its immense beauty,

Or you have no time at all for them.

Because you have to go out and earn money,

as they do now, and have very little time for the children.

First to realize,
首先要认识到,
not verbally...
不是嘴上说说,
but in your heart, in your blood, in your whole thinking,
而是从心底里,从骨子里,完全认识到……
that human beings right through the world,
世界各地的人……
go through the same agonies that one goes through.
经历的是同样的痛苦,如同一人。
The loneliness, the despair, the depressions,
孤独、绝望、压抑、
the extraordinary uncertainty,
极度的不确定感、
insecurity,
不安全感,
whether they live...
不管他们生活在……
10,000 miles away or 2,000 miles or here.
一万英里或两千英里外,还是就在此处。
They are all psychologically bound together.
在精神上,他们都是密不可分的。
If one realizes that...
如果我们认识到这一点,
profoundly...
由衷地,
in your guts, in your blood, in your heart, in your mind...
从心底里,骨子里,刻骨铭心地认识到这一点,
then you are responsible.
那时你才算是负责的。
You have heard all this, you as a human being.
你,作为一个人类,已经听到了这一切。
Why don’t you change?
为什么还不改变?
What prevents you?
什么阻碍了你?
If each one of us asked that question,

verbally,
嘴上说说,
or merely intellectually, as an entertainment,

but asked that question most seriously and deeply,

our consciousness is common to all mankind.
