...division between man and woman.

Though biologically they are different...

...thought in their relationship...

...has brought about great conflict...

...misunderstanding, quarrels...

...disputes, antagonism, hatred.

So thought has bred conflict...
所以思想创造并且滋养了冲突...


...not only externally, outwardly, in the world...
...
不但是外部的,表面的,在我们的外部世界当中...


...but also inwardly in the whole psychological world...
...
同时也在我们整个内在的心理世界当中制造了冲突...


...which is far more important to understand than the reorganisation...
...
后者要比理解社会的外部结构的重组...


...of outward structure of society.
...
来的重要的多。


Society is what we have made of it.
社会就是由我们构成的。


With our greed, with our ambitions, corruption...
它是由我们的贪婪,我们的野心,腐败...


...competition and all the rest of it.
...
竞争和相似的所有一切构成的。


So we have made the society which is disintegrating...
所以我们创造了这个社会,它是支离破碎的...


...becoming dangerous as we are, as human beings...
...
它变得和我们一样的危险,象人类一样...


...are degenerating and becoming dangerous...
...

...killing, kidnapping, terrorising.

Thought is the result of memory...

Memory is based on knowledge and experience.

There is no complete experience about anything...

...and where there is more there is measurement...

...and measurement is never complete, whole.

So knowledge is limited...

...now and always in the future...

...you can add to it, expand it...

...but that very expansion is limited...

...so thought is limited.

所以思想就是有局限的。


And being limited...

...as selfishness, egocentric activity is limited...

...so thought, whatever it does...

...must inevitably create conflict...

无可避免的都会制造出冲突...


...because anything that is limited, any concept...

因为任何局限的事物,任何概念...


...whether religious or ideological...

无论是宗教意义上的还是意识形态上的...


...any ideal will always be limited...

任何想法总会是局限的...


...and therefore it must breed extraordinary conflict...

因此也必然会滋生出巨大的冲突...


...between human beings.

...both religiously and through education...

...the egocentric activity has been emphasised...

...Christians believe in souls...

...separate from the rest of humanity...

...so do the Hindus with their atman and so on.

And this great emphasis on individuality...

...has brought about great harm...

...great competition, cruelty.

...this is shared by all human beings.

Not by you as an American or an Italian or Russian or English...

...or an Indian...

...but it is shared by every human being on this earth.

而是为地球上的所有人类所共有着。


You may intellectually, my friend, accept the logic of it...
我的朋友,你可能会在知性的层面上接受这样的逻辑...


...but what is logic, reason...

但是这种被称作逻辑和推理的东西...


...is merely superficial...
...
也仅仅是非常肤浅的...


...but when actually in one's blood, in one's whole being...

...feels the truth of this...

...that our consciousness is shared by all humanity.

You may believe in one kind of god...

...is shared by every human being...

...to believe in something.

So you are humanity.

This is a great truth.

It is a great something when one actually...

...in one's heart and in one's blood...

...and in one's guts realises this...

...then we would think of the world...

To kill another is to kill oneself...

...all the rest of this stuff.

所有的诸如此类的行为。


The speaker has been, from childhood, involved in all this.
讲话者自己,从孩提时代,就体验了此类神秘经验的种种。

...he knows a great deal or something of all that.

But all these things are like...

What is important, most essential...

...then all the other things are possible.

And what is possible can be understood and transcended.
那么成为可能的事情就能被理解和超越。


That is to find out that which is timeless...
依此就可以发掘什么才是永恒的...


...which is beyond measure...

什么才是超越量度的...


...is much more important...
...
这将比耽溺在那些幼稚的事情上...


...than to indulge in these childish things.

来得更加重要。


And also we ought to talk over together...
并且我们应该共同来探讨...


...what is discipline?
...
什么是纪律?


Why human beings more and more have no sense of order.
为什么人类越来越失去了条理性。


Please, this is not a sermon...
请您了解,这并非是布道...


...which becomes a bore.
...
布道是非常无聊的事情。


The speaker is not telling you what to do, or what to think...
讲话者并非要告诉你怎么做,怎么想...


...but to observe together...
...
而是要和你一起观察...


...to see things as they are...
...
共同看到事物的本来面目...


...not as you or the speaker wishes...
...

...to see exactly...

We live in a very disordered world...

...chaotic, contradictory, cruel world...

...and this has been the result of long...

...forty thousand years of evolution...

..and we have come to this chaotic state.

And in observing that, what is order?
那么观察到这样的状况后,秩序又是什么呢?


Is there any order at all?
究竟有没有秩序这种东西呢?


Or must man, human beings...
还是说一个人,整个人类...


...live perpetually in disorder...
...
必须生活在永恒的混乱当中...


...not only externally but also inwardly?
...
这种混乱不但是外部的混乱,也同时是内在的混乱?


Disorder seems to be our lot...
混乱看起来似乎是我们的命运...


...to think clearly, objectively seems almost impossible...
...
清晰而且客观的思考看起来几乎是不可能的...


...because each one of us wants his own particular way...
...
因为我们每一个人都想要他自己独特的方式...


...his own fulfilment...
...
他自己的满足...


...his own ambition and so on.
...
他自己的野心,等等。


So what is order?
那么什么才是秩序?


And what is the relationship of that to discipline?
并且秩序和纪律的关系又是什么呢?


The word 'discipline' etymologically means...
”纪律“这个词,在语源学上指...


...'a disciple, who learns'...
”学徒,在学习的徒弟“


...it comes from the word 'disciple'.
它来源于”学徒“这个词。


A disciple is one who is learning...
一个学徒是指一个时时在学习的人...


...not conforming, not repeating...
...
而并非顺从和重复的人...


...not repeating slogans...
...
他不是一个重复各种口号的人...


...but constantly learning.
...
而是一个不断学习的人。


So what do we mean by learning?
那么所谓学习又是什么意思呢?


When you go to school, college, university...
当你进入学校进入大学的时候...


...you learn from books...
...
你从书本上学习...


...from the professors, from the teachers, and memorise.
...
你从教授那里学习,从老师那里学习,你记忆下你学习到的东西。


That memory is necessary up to a certain point...
那样的记忆在某种程度上是必需的...


...to have a vocation, a job.
...
譬如说为了从事一门职业,获得一份工作。


Either one uses that memory skilfully or sloppily.
无论一个人使用起这些记忆来是娴熟的还是笨拙的。


So learning so far as we understand it generally...
所以,目前为止我们学习的普遍的理解是...


...is to memorise.
...
学习就是去记忆。


If you read a book, about mathematics...
如果你读一本关于数学的书...


...or computers or what you will...
...
或者关于计算机的书或者你想要读的某一类的书...


...and memorise, and from that act.

于是你就记忆它,然后依据你的记忆来采取行动。


So it becomes mechanical.
于是这就变成了机械化的过程。


So is there a learning?

Is it merely memory operating...

...which have their own discipline, their own way...

...and gradually the brain...

...follows certain categories...

...certain grooves...
...

...and so those grooves and categories and specialisations...

...become a means of accumulating knowledge...

...memory, and operating from that memory.

This is what we call learning.
这就是我们称为学习的东西。


But, learning also implies...

...a constant movement...
...
一种持续不断的运动...


...a brain that is not only burdened...
...
一个不仅仅是被...


...with knowledge of mathematics...

...geography, history or computer and so on...
...

...but also the brain must be active...

...enquiring, questioning, doubting.

And through this process there is never...

...there is never a static state.

Knowledge becomes static...

...when you have accumulated a great deal...

...it becomes repetitive, static...

...but learning is a movement...

...and therefore is never static, it is living.

One must understand this very carefully...

...the self, the 'me', the persona...

...whatever name you give to the psyche...

...is a bundle of memories.

We may think we are great spiritual entities...

...gods or all the rest of that business...

...but it is still memory...

...we are a bundle of memories.

我们是一大堆的记忆。


And to that memory we are adding all the time.
并且我们还在不断地在那个记忆当中添加新的记忆。


But the essence of it is static.
但是它的本质仍然是僵死的。


But whereas learning...
然而学习...


...not merely accumulating knowledge...
...
不非仅仅是积累知识...


...but moving further away from knowledge...
...
而是进一步的从这些知识当中解脱出来...


...constantly...
...
不断的解脱...


...is the act of learning.
...
这才是学习的行动。


That learning brings its own discipline which is to order.
也就是说,学习带来了它自身的纪律-去建立它自身的秩序。


Therefore order is a living thing...
因此,秩序是一个充满活力的事物...


...not conformative, following a pattern...
...
它不循规蹈矩,它没有一定的模式...


...which doesn't mean that you change from day to day to day...
...
而我们总是日复一日地循规蹈矩做事,依照模式的行动...


...that's what you are all doing - going after various fads.
...
这也是你们所有人都在做的事情-我们追随各种各样的流行。


But learning implies tremendous observation...
但是学习意味着全然的观察...


...observation without motive.
...
没有任何动机的观察。


The moment you have motive that motive is static...
你产生动机的那一刻,你的动机是僵死的...


...because that motive is born out of memory.
...
因为动机是产生于记忆的。


I hope my friend is following all this.

If not he says, 'I don't understand what the devil you are talking about!

We all live by motives.
我们的生活中充满了动机。


Sexual motives, motives of pleasure...

...motives of wanting, gratifying...
...
想要得到的动机,想要取悦他人...


...achieving, achieving illumination...
...
想要达成某事,想要获得启发...


...you know, enlightenment - all that - we live by motive...
...
你知道,想要开悟,所有的这一切,我们都是活在动机当中...


...and you are saying something...
...
然而你却在讲...


...either true or utterly nonsense.'

The word 'motive', the root meaning of that word is 'to move'.
“动机”这个单词,它的词根意思是“移动,转移”。


To move, not in a particular direction...
移动,并非朝着一个特定的方向...


...not self-centred egotistic desire.

并非以自我为中心的自大的个人欲求。


This becomes difficult...

...motive implies, as we said...

...motive is born out of memory.
...

Right?

Because I want something which I am missing. Right?

That's one form of motive.

...appear in the beastly papers...

...well-known, power, position...

There is a motive...
动机...


...which is a projection of our own memory and desire...

...therefore that memory is limited and therefore static.

But is this possible, he asks...

...but 'idea' means 'to observe'.

而且还意指“去观察”。


Not through observation come to a conclusion...
不是通过观察获得一个结论...


...just to observe.

而是,仅仅去观察。


When you so deeply observe...
当你深入的去观察...


...with passion, intensity...
...
用你的热情,用你的注意力...


...which is to give your attention to time and thought...

这就是将你的所有的注意力全神贯注在时间和思想上...


...then there is no fear at all.

那么恐惧就完全消失了。

And also wasting our energy in conflict...
也在冲突中浪费我们的能量...


...perpetual quarrels with each other.
...
我们彼此无休止的争吵。


We are wasting our energy trying to 'become something'.
我们浪费我们的能量试图“成为了不起的人”。


There is no 'becoming something' at all...
其实根本没有什么“成为了不起的人”...


...there is only 'what is',
...
有的仅仅是“当下如何”,


and the complete changing of 'what is'.
以及完全彻底的改变这个“当下如何”。


Then you have untold energy.
然后你就会拥有不可言传的巨大能量。


Not to do more mischief...
不是用这些能量去制造更多伤害...


...but to live a life daily...
...
而是让你生活的每一天...


...with great love and compassion and intelligence.
...
都充满巨大的爱和慈悲以及智慧。
