And in relation to that, what is action?

And it is a fact that all time...

The observer, the analyser...

...is the result of a great many...

...so the analyser is examining that which is happening now...

So the analyser is the analysed, which is the present.

I think this is rather an important question to understand...

...we are perceiving directly.

I wish one could talk this over together quite simply...

And psychologically we have the same concept...

...but I will become that.

...when there is that complete attention all that goes, disappears.

Attention is a flame.

Sorrow, the root meaning of that word, is also passion.

The ending of sorrow is passion, not lust.

There is death to the organism...
有机体会死亡...

...we are all getting older every day...

...from the moment we are born...

...we are getting older and older and die.

我们逐渐衰老然后死去。

And we have never asked...
然而我们从未问过...

...what is death, what does it mean...

什么是死亡,死亡意味着什么...

...while living - not when we come to the end of it.

While living we have never asked what is the meaning...
当我们还活着时,我们从未问过死亡的意义...

...the significance, the depth of death.

We have never asked what is the depth of life, living.
我们从未问过生的深邃含义,生存是什么。

It must have something enormously significant, living...

...but we have reduced it to such a potty little affair.

但是我们却把它缩小为一件微不足道的事情。

So we have never asked there...
所以我们从未问过...

...and we never ask certainly what death is.

当然我们也从未问过死亡是什么。

And as two friends let's look at it...
那么作为两个朋友,我们一起来看一下...

...not frightened...

不要心存恐惧...

...because then you will never understand it.

So as we went into the question of fear last week...

...that is the 'I', the ego, the person, the persona...

...what is that self, the 'me'...

究竟什么是我自己,什么是“我”...

...that is going to die?

这个要死去的我究竟是什么?

And that is what we are frightened of, not of death.
这才是我们真正恐惧的东西,而非恐惧死亡。

The 'me' which has been accumulated...
这个“我”一直在积累...

...in this life as memory, knowledge...
...
人生中的记忆,知识...

...experience, the 'me'...
...
经验,积累“我”的感觉...

...my selfishness, my greed, my ambition...
...
我的自私,我的贪婪,我的野心...

...all the recording, records...
...
所有的记录,所有记录下的内容...

...which is stored in the brain, the 'me'...
...
这一切都存储在我们的大脑中,在“我”中...

...and we are frightened that me is going to come to an end.
...
于是我们恐惧这个我有一天会走到终点。

So we have to examine closely what is the 'me'.

Who are you, apart from your name and your bank account...

...where you live and all that kind of stuff...

...apart from the physical me, the physical body...

...you are tall, short - apart from all that, what are you?

Have you ever faced it?

Let's face it now, don't be frightened.

Are you not all the accumulated memories...

...memories, pleasurable, pain...

You can invent something superior...

...the actuality is what you are...

...this vast collection of humanity...
...
所有人类...

...of memories of human beings.
...
所有人类的全部记忆。

If you are a great technician...

...putting the atom bomb together...
...
制造了原子弹...

...the neutron bomb...
...
中子弹...

...you have to accumulate a great deal of knowledge...

...and death may come and you just say...

...'Wait a minute, let me finish it.'

Which is all the process of gathering...

You are that.

That's a fact.

But we don't like to look at the fact.

We like to say, 'No, I am something more.'

This 'something more' is the desire, is thought saying...

So that too is the invention of thought.

So you are the bundle of memories put together by thought.

Face it!

And death comes along and says, 'My friend, that's the end.'

And you say, 'Wait, please, let me live a little longer.'

So, please follow this closely and you will see it for yourself.

Time is now.

Time is contained, the past, the future is now.

So death is now.

That means, if I am attached to my wife...

Aren't you attached to something?

And death comes and says, 'That is the end of it.'

Cuts it.

So can you be free of the attachment?
那么你能够放下一切牵绊吗?

Therefore you are living then...
如果你能放下,那你便开始生活了...

...living and dying at the same time.
...
生与死是同在的。

You understand this? Oh, no!
你们明白吗?哦,不!

Do it, sir, and you will see what an extraordinary thing it is then.
去做,先生,你将会看到这是多么不同凡响的事情。

If you are attached to your memories, to your experience...
如果你仍然纠缠于你的记忆,你的经验...

...to your failure, to your ambition...
...
你的失败,你的野心...

...all that is going to come to an end.
...
那一切都是会结束的。

So can you live...

...with death, which is to end your ambition now?

And to live without ambition means tremendous energy...
不带野心的生活需要巨大的能量...

...not to do more mischief.

不是去制造更多的危害。

So death and life are always together.

And when this happens, actually, not theoretically...

...not imaginatively, not wishing for it...
...

...but actually doing it...

...to whatever you are attached.

I know it is difficult if the husband says to his wife...

...'Darling, I am not attached to you any more.'

He will have a lot of trouble.

And that raises another problem, a tremendous problem.

You may be free from attachment and she is not...

...or she is and you are not.

Then what is relationship?

Is relationship merely the accumulation of memory...
人与人的关系是否仅是记忆的积累呢...

...as pleasure, pain?

愉快的记忆,痛苦的记忆?

Is relationship then merely a sensation?
是否人与人的关系仅仅是感情呢?

The image of each other, is that relationship?
心中存有对方的某种形象,那是人与人的关系吗?

And so when there are...
所以只要存在...

...these separate images...
...
这些互相分离的形象...

...there is conflict, pain, and anxiety.
...
就会存在冲突,痛苦和焦虑。

So where there is pain, anxiety, fear, love is not.
所以当痛苦,焦虑和恐惧存在,爱就不存在。

So death and life always march together.
所以生与死是同时并进的。

Then there is that sense of absolute freedom...
然后全然的自由就产生了...

...from the little travail of myself.
...
从我自己琐细的痛苦中完全解脱的自由。

And that is necessary...
并且必须要...

...to understand that which is timeless...
...
了解什么是不依赖时间的...

...if there is such a thing as eternity.
...
是否存在一种永恒。

We will talk about it another time...

...but to see all this as a movement of life...

...dying and living.

Therefore in that sense you will never kill another...
